Exforge is a combination medication comprised of two different drugs (Amlodipine and Valsartan) used to treat high blood pressure. Amlodipine is a medication that falls into the class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. This action results in less calcium and thus relaxes or dilates the muscles that surround the arteries; this enlarges the coronary arteries and as a result lowers blood pressure. Valsartan belongs to the class of medications known as angiotensin receptor blockers. Angiotensin is a chemical that attaches to angiotensin receptors found in many tissues but primarily on smooth muscle cells surrounding the blood vessels. This action causes the blood vessels to narrow or constrict which leads to an increase in blood pressure. Valsartan dilates the blood vessels and reduces the blood pressure.
