Dabigatran Etexilate is an anti-coagulant, which inhibits thrombin from producing blood clots. Currently Dabigatran Etexilate is used to prevent venous thromboembolic events in adults who have undergone total hip or total knee replacement surgery.
Dabigatran Etexilate prevents thrombus formation by inhibiting thrombin, which is the enzyme that allows the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin during the coagulation cascade.
The recommended dosage of Dabigatran Etexilate is a fixed dosage of two capsules of 110mg once daily. A single capsule of 110mg is taken between one to four hours following surgery, continuing with 2 capsules once daily for a total of 10 days in total knee replacement patients. However in patients that have undergone total hip replacement, they would take the same dosage for 28 to 35 days. Specific patients, including patients over the age of 75 and patients that have some renal (kidney) impairments, should take another second dosage of two capsules of 75mg.
