How Welchol Works
The active ingredient in Welchol is colesevelam hydrochloride, a non-absorbed, polymeric, lipid-lowering and glucose – lowering agent. It is primarily used to reduce high cholesterol levels. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications. Welchol is a bile acid sequestrant. It works to reduce cholesterol by increasing the removal of bile acids from the body. As the body loses bile acids, it replaces them by converting cholesterol from the blood to bile acids. This causes the blood level of cholesterol to decrease. Welchol may be prescribed for other purposes other that to reduce cholesterol.
