Generic name: Niacin, Neasyn

How Niacin Works
Niaspan works to lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and triglycerides, while also raising HDL (“good”) cholesterol. Niacin, also known as nicotinic acid, is a B vitamin which is naturally occurring in plants and animals and is present in a variety of multi-vitamin supplements. Apart from lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, Niaspan is also used to lower the risk of heart attack in individuals with a history of heart attacks and high cholesterol. Additionally, it is also at times used to treat coronary artery disease.

Generic Niaspan vs Brand Niaspan
The brand Niaspan and the generic Niacin are chemically and therapeutically exactly the same, the only difference is the manufacturer. We currently have the brand from Canada and the generic from India. It may come from other countries around the world.

Niacin Possible side effects
Always take Niaspan exactly as directed to you by your doctor. Follow the directions on the prescription label carefully and contact a medical professional if you are at all concerned that this product may be affecting you adversely. Seek immediate emergency medical attention if any of signs of an allergic reaction are experienced such as hives, labored breathing, swollen face/lips/tongue/throat. If you exhibit any of the following side effects, call your doctor immediately:

• Increased or uneven heart rate
• Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
• Light-headedness (feeling like you might pass out)
• Muscle pain, swelling, tenderness, or weakness

Other, less serious side effects that may not require medical attention (but that should still be monitored) include diarrhea, dry skin, increased gas, itchy, mild dizziness, nausea, leg cramps, muscle pain, problems sleeping, sweating/chills, warm or red skin, sometimes accompanied by a tingly feeling under the skin. The preceding lists account for some of the most commonly accounted for side effects of Niaspan. It is better to err on the side of caution and contact your doctor if you feel like this product may be having adverse effects on you and your health.

Niacin Guidelines
Prior to taking Niaspan, be sure to tell your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking, but especially any cholesterol-lowering drugs such as atorvastatin, (Lipitor), pravastatin (Pravachol), or simvastatin (Zocor). Additionally, it is imperative to tell your doctor if you are using blood thinners, blood pressure or heart medications, multivitamins or mineral supplements that may contain niacin. While taking Niaspan, hot beverages should be avoided as they can worsen some of the side effects, most notably the itching, redness or tingling of the skin. Alcohol should also be avoided as it can result in liver damage, or make some of the side effects more noticeable.

The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
