How Heartgard Dog Works
Heartgard Plus is used in the prevention of heartworm infection and the control and treatment of various other worm infections. Heartgard contains the active ingredient Ivermectin; it works against canine heartworm disease; it does so by attacking the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis). It continually does this for thirty days following infection, but also works to treat and control ascarids and hookworms.
Heartgard Possible Side Effects The following side effects have been reported from Heartgard Plus. It should always be taken with the consultation of your veterinarian.
• Anorexia, ataxia
• Convulsions, depression/lethargy, diarrhea
• Hypersalivation, mydriasis
• Staggering, vomiting
Heartgard Dog Guidelines To administer Heartgard, please following these steps:
1. Remove one chewable tablet at a time from the blister card.
2. Return the card with the intact chewables to the box in order to protect the product from light and heat.
3. Offer the product by hand to your dog. Even though most dogs find this product palatable, it may also be added to a small amount of food, if your dog is hesitant to take it on its own.
It is imperative that your dog chews this product, as opposed to swallowing it whole. If your dog generally swallows treats whole, Heartgard may be broken into pieces. Take care that your dog consumes a complete dose - observe her/him following administration to make sure it is not lost or rejected. If you suspect that any of the dose has been lost, re-dosing is recommended. As with all drugs, keep this product out of the reach of children. In the event of ingestion by humans, contact a medical professional, or call a Poison Control Center for advice concerning ingestion by humans.
