How Ibsrela Works
Ibsrela (Tenapanor) is a medication used in adults to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). This medication is not for use in children, especially children under the age of 6. Ibsrela is an inhibitor of sodium receptors on the surface of the small intestine and colon, which are primarily responsible for the absorption of dietary sodium. By blocking the effects of these receptors, Ibsrela reduces absorption of sodium, which in turn results in an increase in water secretion into the intestines. This accelerates intestinal transit time, and results in a softer stool consistency. Ibsrela has also been shown to reduce abdominal pain by decreasing internal organ hypersensitivity and by decreasing intestinal permeability (looseness of the intestinal walls). All of these effects together allow Ibsrela to help with constipation and abdominal pain caused by IBS-C, leading to a better quality of life.
